The Enemy of the Internet - Internet

In this day and age advertising is key for most business and the Internet is the top of the food chain. Of Internet advertising, the most effective types all revolve around Search Engines. There are programmers out there that are purposefully sabotaging all the hard work that technicians have spent years setting up by creating a program that blocks all forms of advertising on the internet. Sounds harmless and good right? Wrong. Those ads, sponsored links and commercials are what fund the websites you all love and use. Do you think Google search makes money by letting you use its services for free? No it sells advertising space to businesses so that it can afford to be the #1 Search Engine worldwide. The cost of running the servers to contain all its information must be phenomenally huge let alone the cost of employing 1,000s of employees to keep up with all the new information. By blocking these advertisements you are leading to the downfall of all those websites that you love and use daily. Would you like to see Youtube fail? Or Hulu? Or Yahoo? Very few sites can get by on charitable donation alone and those are usually purely informational, not for entertainment or ease of access. The Programmers of software like Adblocker Plus and Pro should be ashamed of themselves, the Internet is a powerful new tool and no matter how invincible it looks anything can be sabotaged if the money making potential is taken away.

While using the vast entity that is the Internet have you ever taken the time to find out where its revenue comes from? Or even find out what the top 10 sites in the world are? Well I will sum it up here in short. Internet Advertising in the U.S. last year (2010) generated 26 billion dollars for our economy. Search Advertising is the leader among this revenue with over 16 billion of the total revenue generated. This money is generated from advertising and sponsored results, Adblocker programs are seeking to destroy this revenue. With these softwares the computer on which they are installed cannot see ANY advertisements, thus they cannot participate in the advertising community and their clicks cannot generate revenue. Almost all of the top 10 most used internet websites worldwide are effected by this directly;

1. Google.com - Sponsored results and banner ads generate most of their revenue.2. Facebook.com - Ads on the side of FB Pages and Games are most of revenue.3. Youtube.com - Commercials and banner ads are their mainstay income.4. Yahoo.com - Sponsored results have long been the staple income of this one.5. Baidu.com - The Chinese search engine relies on Sponsored results as well.6. Blogger.com - Is owned and funded by Google, so the correlation there is direct.7. Wikipedia.org - The only one of the top sites funded by charity and non-profit.8. Live.com - The Microsoft Windows Search, funded by Sponsored Ads.9. Twitter.com - Selling Tweets to Search Engines and Promoted Users fund this.10. QQ.com - The Chinese one-stop Internet portal ads of all kinds are used here.

So 9/10 of the most frequently used sites rely on this type of revenue, if even a significant portion of Internet users were to get Adblocker programs it would cause a major disturbance in incomes. In these economic times one of the few reliable resources we have are these websites on the Internet and to disrespect them in such a way is ludicrous.

The cost of running these websites is much greater than one might imagine as well. We shall use Google as our example, Google employs approximately 24,400 people and has an income of approximately 10.8 billion dollars annually. They record a profit of around 7.5 billion, this means that it cost them a little more than 3 billion dollars to operate Google in 2010. Google Maps for example is a HUGE task where they have employed hundreds of people in those fancy Google Cars to drive around the country and literally take pictures of every roadside in America, this all has to be paid for and Google's ads fund it all. If Adblocker programs were to cause this income to drop investors and advertisers would move on to the next thing that was effective for them.

Adblocker programs have been around for nearly a decade now and have not made much of an effect but now they are legitimate add-ons to our browsers and are more popular than ever. The program stops any advertisements from placing temporary internet files necessary to show their ad images or texts on your browser while allowing the main code-string to continue unhindered. There are over 15 million registered users in the U.S. of ad-blocking programs, that is nearly 5% of the U.S. population. Fads like this one grow exponentially as well so the larger the user base the faster that base will grow. Many attempt have been made to assault the program from a webmasters code but to no avail, the programmers of the Adblocker are good at their jobs and consistently update their software to fix any ways webmasters find to detect the plugin extentsion.

The Internet is the largest grouping of human knowledge, culture and ideals we have ever created. This massive and dynamic tool is supported by pillars of advertising, just like T.V. before it and Radio before that. Remove the supports and it all falls apart, just look at the many marvelous inventions of the past that had no marketing potential and died merely because investors didn't see a profit, the service or product might have been enjoyable to the consumer but not to the manufacturer. This is a message to all of you out there that rely on the Internet for a work tool, your social life or just for entertainment value; Adblocker programs are the death of the Internet and we need to boycott them at all costs. I'm sure at this very moment entire division's of Google are devoted to figurin out how to make their Ad code unbreakable by the Adblocking Software to stop this epidemic. This is a simple PPC Account Manager's plea to the people of the U.S.;

"Hundreds of Thousands of us rely on the Internet for our daily bread, it supports our families and lifestyles. These people seek to take that away from us by removing services we pay to have others see, this is not only wrong it is a direct assault against our livelihood. These people either have no concept of what they are initiating or they sincerely have no care for one of the most powerful tools ever created by man. Please people, do not fall for the simple nicety of not having to see a commercial, that commercial pays for you to have access to the show you are watching."

Spread this message; do not allow these programs and others like them to harm our beloved Internet. I leave it in your hands, if not for a few crusaders we may all find ourselves in a world in regress, going back to the days of relying on T.V. and Phones alone. Lets move forward America, not backwards, let your friends and family know that using these programs will ruin this luxury we have. Make this message viral, send it far and wide, we have a lot of ground to catch up on the Adblockers.
